Google Gemini 101: Frontier Multimodal Architecture
An introduction to Google Gemini and Google DeepMind, including the Argon, Carbon, Hydrogen and Xenon models. By Thomas Cherickal. Status as of November 2, 2026.
Introduction
Gemini is the family of AI models built by Google DeepMind, and it is also the name of Google's assistant app. It debuted in December 2023, navigated an industry slowdown through much of 2026, and moved back to the center of the frontier conversation with the latest element-generation releases. This architectural guide explains what Gemini is, how DeepMind fits in, and what each of the four new models actually represents.
In about a month, Google shipped Gemini Argon, announced Gemini Carbon, and saw leaks about two more models called Hydrogen and Xenon. All four are named after chemical elements. Today, only Argon is available to the public.
This guide maintains strict discipline between confirmed engineering facts and unconfirmed industry rumors, labeling every official Google claim as Google's. Where independent benchmarks disagree with Google's published metrics, both versions appear. Every link in the reference list points directly to primary sources used.
What is Google Gemini?
Sundar Pichai and Demis Hassabis announced the foundation model family on December 6, 2023, organized across three initial compute sizes: Ultra handled highly complex reasoning tasks, Pro covered a wide breadth of multimodal workflows, and Nano ran directly on client edge devices. The name Gemini refers to the historic merger of two world-class AI laboratories - Google Brain and DeepMind - as well as NASA's pioneering Project Gemini space program.
The defining architectural idea of Gemini is native multimodality: one model handles text, images, audio, video, and code from the start, instead of a language model augmented with vision or speech adapters as an afterthought. The current flagship continues this unified foundation. In the official Gemini Argon API documentation, inputs include interleaved text, image, video, audio, and PDF formats, with structured text and function calling as output.
Each model generation organizes compute along consistent operational tiers:
- Gemini Pro: The enterprise flagship model engineered for complex multi-step reasoning, million-token document parsing, and agent orchestration.
- Gemini Flash: High-throughput, sub-second latency model designed for high-frequency API routing and real-time interactive tasks.
- Gemini Flash-Lite: Ultra-lightweight model tuned for high-volume operational cost minimization.
- Gemini Deep Think: An extended test-time reasoning mode that allocates dynamic inference compute budgets to verify multi-step logic chains.
The word Gemini also names Google's consumer assistant app. The app and the underlying foundation models share branding and core computational engines, but they are separate entities: the app is an end-user conversational interface, whereas Gemini foundation models are the intelligence engines powering APIs, developer tooling, and enterprise platforms.
Google DeepMind, the Research Engine
Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg, and Mustafa Suleyman founded DeepMind in London in 2010. Google Brain started a year later as a deep-learning project inside Google. For years the two organizations ran in parallel, with DeepMind pursuing historic scientific breakthroughs through deep reinforcement learning and Google Brain building foundational software infrastructure, computing systems, and core transformer architectures.
In April 2023, Alphabet merged the two groups into Google DeepMind, led by Hassabis as Chief Executive Officer. Gemini was the first major frontier foundation model system built together through this consolidated research and engineering apparatus.
The laboratory's research record includes AlphaGo and AlphaFold. In October 2024, Demis Hassabis and John Jumper were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for AlphaFold, sharing it with David Baker for computational protein design.
The same unified lab now ships commercial products and conducts breakthrough scientific research. Google's Argon launch post describes Argon translating the AlphaQubit quantum error decoder into an optimized hardware kernel that nearly doubled its inference throughput on quantum simulation systems, alongside synthesizing enzyme designs that passed physical laboratory testing.
The Rise, the Slowdown and the Return
The Rise
Gemini foundation models advanced rapidly through 2025 with integrated chain-of-thought reasoning and native multimodality. On November 18, 2025, Google launched Gemini Pro as its most capable intelligence model to date, available on day one across the Gemini app, Search, AI Studio, and Vertex AI. By February 2026, the consumer app reached more than 750 million monthly active users.
The Slowdown
Gemini Pro underwent rapid iteration cycles, followed by an extended series of Flash models. Technology analysts and industry publications described a visible gap at the top of Google's lineup while competing laboratories released flagship reasoning updates.
On the July earnings call, Google leadership confirmed that Gemini was transitioning to a significantly larger next-generation architecture and acknowledged it was addressing competitive ground in agentic coding benchmarks. User growth cooled as well: the app scaled from 750 million to 900 million to 950 million monthly users across three sequential updates, gaining about 150 million in one stretch and 50 million in the next. These are company-reported metrics reflecting steady maturation at massive global scale.
The Return
The launch of Gemini Argon decisively concluded this quiet spell, inaugurating the element-generation releases.
Gemini Argon
Google announced Argon on September 30, 2026, granting initial sandboxed access to trusted cyber defenders through the Fairwind Program. Broad general availability followed on October 13, 2026.
Architecturally, input prompt tokens, test-time thinking tokens, and final output tokens share a single unified context window of 1,048,576 tokens. Default output generation is 65,536 tokens per request, but long decode functionality allows a single continuous task to reach 1,048,576 tokens.
Pricing for Gemini 4 Argon is $2.00 USD per million input tokens and $10.00 USD per million output tokens through November 30, 2026, transitioning to $4.00 USD input and $20.00 USD output thereafter. Argon is not offered on the free API tier.
Argon runs in the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, in Google
Antigravity for Ultra subscribers, and programmatically through the Gemini API and Google Cloud under the
official model identifier gemini-4-argon.
The pricing structure translates into concrete operational figures. A single long decode that fills all 1,048,576 output tokens costs approximately $10.49 USD in output charges at the introductory rate, scaling to about $20.97 USD once the rate transitions after November 30. Because test-time thinking tokens are metered and billed as output tokens, configuring a high thinking level on challenging computational tasks adds to that cost before the visible answer begins streaming.
Google's published benchmarks indicate high capability: Argon scores 77.9% on DeepSWE v1.1, leads the Vals Index, and reaches 91.7% on the LVBench long-video evaluation. Google also stated that Argon helped the Chrome engineering team finish an architectural refactor across hundreds of files in weeks instead of months, and cut session preparation time by 40% in the open-source Agent Development Kit.
Those are Google's benchmarks, and independent sources add important caveats. Independent latency tracking puts Argon's time to first token at nearly 48 seconds at high thinking budgets, higher than the median for competing reasoning models.
Google states that it built Argon under its Frontier Safety Framework, incorporating an active monitor that reads the model's reasoning trails and proposed tool actions, halting execution if it detects an unintended workaround. Google reports a 0.7% attack success rate on the Gray Swan prompt injection benchmark. The strongest offensive cyber capabilities are withheld from public endpoints via the Fairwind Program.
Gemini Carbon
Carbon followed fifteen days after Argon. Google announced Carbon on October 28, 2026, as its strongest frontier model, engineered specifically for state-of-the-art cybersecurity offense-defense analysis and long-horizon autonomous capabilities.
Google's claims for Carbon report notable benchmark advancements:
- Ranks first on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v5.0 with an aggregate score of 59.
- Reaches 88.2% on SEC-bench Pro for autonomous vulnerability discovery.
- Scores 54.8% on ExploitGym for safe adversarial exploit verification.
- Scores 71.0% on CWE-bench for automated vulnerability patching and remediation.
- Places fourth on WebDev Arena, up 89 Elo points over prior baselines.
- Posts a 0.0% attack success rate on the Gray Swan indirect prompt injection benchmark, down from Argon's 0.7%.
Access is currently restricted. Carbon is available exclusively to a vetted subset of cyber defenders through the Fairwind Program, with additional trusted partners phased in. Google states that Carbon will reach enterprise developers and consumers as soon as possible, without publishing specific calendar commitments. Third-party API tracking verified that Carbon lacks a public API endpoint, while introductory pricing parity matches Argon at $2.00 / $10.00 per million tokens.
Before launch, industry reports highlighted internal codenames including Argon, Barium, and Carbon, with the internal Barium-B build chosen to ship publicly as Argon.
Hydrogen and Xenon
Google has not officially announced either model. Hydrogen is reportedly the internal development codename for
an upcoming Flash-tier model, and third-party tracking portals list the model string
gemini-4-flash-preview with status in testing and an expected window in late 2026. Because these
details derive from external leaks, specifications remain unconfirmed.
Information regarding Xenon is less clear. Community reports circulating since late October 2026 claim Xenon is designed to deliver frontier-grade reasoning comparable to unreleased competitive baselines at a substantially lower serving cost. Google has confirmed no launch date, and the model remains in internal evaluation.
Technical reporting requires a consistent standard: an engineering claim counts as confirmed when Google publishes it in a blog post, a model card, or API documentation, while other details remain labeled as unconfirmed reports.

What This Site Will Focus On
When The Digital Futurist covers Gemini, the technical focus centers on AI development and AI research, not on multimodality as an isolated novelty. Multimodality is a tactile skill that develops quickly through practice: upload a photo, feed the model a PDF, hand it a video log, and within a few weeks your workflow adapts naturally.
AI development and research require deeper architectural study:
- How does long decode operate under million-token output constraints?
- Why do test-time thinking levels change cost, latency, and reasoning depth?
- How should teams evaluate a model before trusting it with production repositories?
- What concrete failure modes does a runtime safety monitor guard against?
A practical routine shows what this looks like: pick a complex task from your own codebase and run it across Argon's three thinking levels (low, medium, and high). Record the token consumption, the wait for the first token (TTFT), the total cost, and the quality of the result, then compare your empirical numbers with published figures. The variance between the two is the most useful insight an engineering team can possess.
Coverage focuses on four key areas: how models are architected, trained, and evaluated; what research papers and model cards disclose; how to measure cost, latency, and quality on production workloads; and where confirmed facts end and rumors begin. Models evolve continuously, while rigorous verification standards outlast individual releases.
Conclusion
Gemini is a foundation model family built by a laboratory that unites scientific discovery with production software delivery. Its path ran from a December 2023 debut through an industry cooldown in 2026 to the arrival of the element generation. Argon is the model you can integrate today, featuring a documented endpoint, a published price, and a million-token output decode window.
Carbon is Google's claimed upgrade, announced October 28, 2026, but gated to Fairwind partners. Hydrogen and Xenon remain third-party reports without official Google announcements behind them.
The practical step for developers and technical leaders is to benchmark Argon directly. Because thinking tokens are billed as output tokens, evaluate proprietary tasks across low, medium, and high thinking to establish empirical balance between quality, latency, and cost before standardizing on a configuration.
